Alarm response & escalation Genetec · Milestone XProtect

An alarm fires at 2:14 AM. Who answers it?

SmartNotifier is the alarm response and escalation layer for Genetec Security Center and Milestone XProtect. It routes every alarm to the right person, escalates when nobody acknowledges, and keeps the record.

Runs on your infrastructure · your database, your storage
ALARM 4417 · WAREHOUSE B resolved
  1. Door forced open — Warehouse B, Dock 3
    Severity: Critical
  2. Delivered — Guard group (3 recipients, WhatsApp)
    Snapshot attached
  3. No acknowledgement after 60 seconds
    Escalating to level 1
  4. Delivered — Shift supervisor (WhatsApp, Telegram)
  5. No acknowledgement after 60 seconds
    Escalating to level 2
  6. Delivered — Security manager (WhatsApp, Teams)
  7. Acknowledged — Ravi Kumar, +91 XXXXX XX847
Escalation stopped. Response time: 2m 46s.

An illustration of one alarm's record. Timeouts, escalation levels and recipient groups are configured per site. The first acknowledgement is final — a second responder cannot overwrite the first one's record.

01 / The problem

Your VMS already knows. Nobody's watching.

Every VMS raises alarms. Almost none of them make sure an alarm is handled.

Alarms surface inside the client application, on a console somebody has to be sitting at. Native notification is email-first and per-server: it can't route by zone, by severity, or by who is actually on shift tonight. When nobody responds, nothing happens — the alarm just sits there until somebody opens the client the next morning.

And there is no record. Nobody can prove an alarm was seen, by whom, or when.

01

Alarms are visible only to an operator at the console.

02

Native notification can't route by zone, severity, or time of day.

03

Nothing happens when nobody responds.

04

No acknowledgement trail, so no accountability.

02 / What SmartNotifier does

From alarm to accountable response.

01

Capture

A plugin runs in-process inside Genetec Security Center or Milestone XProtect. It picks up every alarm, resolves the camera and its zone, and grabs a snapshot at the moment of the event. It reads events only — it never modifies your recording or alarm configuration.

02

Route

Priority-ordered rules decide who hears about it. Match on alarm name, severity, zone, camera, and time-of-day window in the site's own timezone. Night shift and day shift can have entirely different recipients. A cooldown window per rule keeps one faulty camera from flooding everyone.

03

Deliver

The alert reaches the responder on WhatsApp, Telegram, Microsoft Teams, Slack, PagerDuty or email — with the snapshot, the clip, the camera, the zone, the severity and the local time. No app to install. No VMS client on their phone.

04

Escalate

The responder acknowledges from the message itself. If nobody acknowledges inside the timeout, it escalates to the next level, then the next, until someone does. Every delivery, every acknowledgement, every escalation is recorded against the alarm.

03 / Escalation

What "escalation" means in practice.

The timeline at the top of this page is one alarm's full record. Here is the mechanism behind it.

When an alarm is ingested, an escalation check is scheduled for the acknowledgement timeout. If the alarm was acknowledged or dismissed by the time it runs, the ladder stops. If not, it escalates one level, notifies the escalation groups for that level, and schedules the next check. Past the maximum level, the alarm is marked expired and the record shows that nobody ever responded.

Escalation groups are separate from first-response groups, so your security manager isn't paged on every routine alarm — only on the ones nobody handled.

The first acknowledgement is final. A second responder arriving late cannot overwrite the first responder's record, and the system returns a conflict rather than silently rewriting history.

04 / Works with your VMS

Genetec and Milestone, in-process.

Genetec

Security Center

Workspace SDK plugin, Security Center 5.10. Subscribes to alarm events, resolves the source camera and its parent area for zone naming, captures a 1280×720 snapshot. Runs inside Security Center, deployed as a standard .gapp plugin.

Milestone

XProtect

Event Server plugin built on the MIP SDK. Registers for alarm indications and processes initial events only, so alarm state changes never produce duplicate alerts. Snapshots come from an image connection against the camera.

SmartNotifier uses the SDKs your VMS already includes, but the two vendors handle it differently. On Milestone, MIP SDK usage is covered by your existing licence and there is nothing separate to buy. On Genetec, Security Center needs a plugin part number activated on your licence before the plugin will load — we arrange that with Genetec as part of the pilot. Either way, there is no new VMS licence to buy.
05 / Delivery

The channel your responders already have open.

WhatsApp
Snapshot inline. Reply ACK to acknowledge.
Telegram
Photo with inline acknowledge and dismiss buttons.
Microsoft Teams
Adaptive card with action buttons, severity-coloured.
Slack
Block Kit message with action buttons.
PagerDuty
Events API v2, mapped to your severity levels.
Email
SMTP, as fallback or as primary.
Responders need nothing installed. No app, no VMS client, no account to create.
06 / Deployment

Your server. Your storage. Your footage.

SmartNotifier runs entirely inside your network — as a Windows service on your server, or as containers on your Docker host. Alarm data and snapshots go to your database and your storage. We operate no cloud that touches your footage, and we cannot see your video.

The only outbound traffic is the notification itself, to the messaging provider you have chosen.

07 / Questions

The ones we get asked first.

Q/01Do we need a new Milestone or Genetec licence?
You don't buy a new VMS licence, but the two platforms differ. On Milestone, MIP SDK usage is covered by your existing licence and there is nothing separate to buy. On Genetec, Security Center needs a plugin part number activated on your licence before the plugin will load — we arrange that with Genetec as part of the pilot.
Q/02Will this affect VMS performance?
The plugin subscribes to events and takes a snapshot. It doesn't touch recording server configuration, doesn't write to the VMS, and doesn't retrieve recorded video from the archive. Snapshot capture is best-effort with a five-second timeout — if it fails, the alarm is still delivered without an image.
Q/03Why not just use XProtect Mobile or Genetec Mobile?
Those tell you an alarm happened, to whoever has the app open at the time. They don't route by zone or shift, they don't escalate when nobody responds, and they don't produce a record of who responded and when. SmartNotifier sits on top of your VMS rather than replacing anything in it.
Q/04What if WhatsApp is down?
Each channel retries on transient failures with exponential back-off, and the job layer retries on top of that. You can route the same alarm to more than one channel, and escalation levels can use different channels entirely — WhatsApp at level 0, Teams and email at level 1.
Q/05Is our video stored anywhere we don't control?
No. Snapshots and clips go to your storage. Links are time-limited. We never receive your footage.
Q/06How long does installation take?
Around 45 minutes for a first site, done remotely with you on the call.
30-day pilot

Run it on your own system
for 30 days.

We install it, configure your rules with you, and you see exactly what your team sees. No cost during the pilot. If it isn't useful, we uninstall it cleanly.
